Speaker details

Katie Gamanji
Apple

Katie is a cloud native leader, practitioner, and contributor. As a cloud platform engineer, Katie has built the infrastructure for large, multi-national organizations with gravitas towards cloud-native technologies, principles, and Kubernetes as the focal point. At CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation), she was a Technical Oversight Committee member and led the CNCF End User Community. At present, Katie advises the Keptn startup and is part of the OpenUK C-suite.

Recently, Katie released the Cloud Native Fundamentals course and led the creation of the CNCF KCNA (Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate) certification. Additionally, Katie is an active keynote public speaker, a  #TechWomen100 winner, and a strong advocate for women in STEM.

It is undeniable that Kubernetes served as the gravitational point for the cloud native landscape. By elevating a pluggable system, multiple areas were developed in the industry, galvanizing solutions that set the fundamentals of interoperability, standardization, and open guidelines for tooling.

Today, the cloud native ecosystem is filled with solutions that enable practitioners to build their platforms based on their market criteria, with minimal compromises. However, very few of these practitioners are putting environmental sustainability on their agenda. Considering the critical point we have reached as a population regarding climate change, technologists must begin to think about their infrastructure from an environmentally conscious perspective and innovate through green technology.

This talk will outline how cloud native tools, such as Kepler and KEDA carbon aware operator, can be used to estimate energy consumption and carbon emission of workloads. At the same time, attendees will leave with an understanding of how a culture of transparent and governed development in open source drives the ubiquity of the cloud native in a scalable and sustainable manner.
