Steven is CTO at clevercloud.com
He worked on the AntiDDoS detection system bringing significant improvements from specialized appliances. Then he led a data team to build the Data infrastructure, mixing Hadoop Pig & Flink in a lambda fashion pipeline, which became the main trusted data source for BI and internal needs. Then, he embraced a new challenge by leading Observability and Data products development and engineering teams, then enlarged the scope to Cloud Services. He joined Clever Cloud as CTO to build the best cloud for developers and to offer an alternative to GAFAM for high end Cloud Services.
Since the 1990s, the role of a developer has continuously evolved, accumulating new concepts, tools, and options, and thereby increasing complexity. From distributed infrastructures to cloud services, automation, containers, and orchestrators, a developer in 2024 must master a vast array of knowledge far beyond what was required in 2004. Is this really a step forward for our industry?
As an Ops professional, I must apologize for this overload. Our natural bias towards complexity has led us to impose technologies on developers that often stray from their core responsibilities. It's time to reverse this trend.
In this talk, we will go beyond merely assessing the past two decades. We will propose concrete strategies to simplify the developer’s role, leveraging innovative technologies and methodologies. These tools will help break down the unnecessary complexity while retaining the benefits of recent technological advancements.
The stars have aligned: the need for reducing complexity is now met with new approaches and technologies. These offer developers the chance to focus on their craft without sacrificing the advantages gained from the last twenty years of innovation.
